A recent review by 13thfloor.co.nz of a Pachyman set at Whammy celebrated the way Pachy used his magic sound to “immediately create a space nobody wanted to leave”. We didn't want him to leave either, so we're bringing him back to Aotearoa this January for four very special shows.
Wednesday 20 January, Pachyman takes the stage at Double Whammy, with his fellow champion in the arena Christoph El Truento. Thursday 21 January, the pair duke it out again at a free party at the Festival Of Lights, New Plymouth. Then, Saturday 23 January, Pachy throws it down at the sold out Tora Bombora fest in Wairarapa, before reverberating the hallowed walls of Pōneke’s San Fran alongside Antipodean all-stars The Lahaar on Sunday 24 January.
Over four albums, Pachyman has proven himself a dedicated craftsman working in the lineage of dub reggae while mastering the methodology of masters like King Tubby and Scientist, using vintage gear, constructing glorious walls of sound, and developing an intuitive understanding of the power of repetition. Since his triumphant last visit in early 2025, Pachy “Pachyman” Garcia has released what critics are calling his most adventurous album to date, the dubtastic album Another Place.
With Another Place, he synthesizes the myriad scenes that have recontextualized dub, from the synth-pop of William Onyeabor and Yellow Magic Orchestra to Basic Channel’s amniotic dub techno. Featuring even stronger Latin flavours infused through his sublime Lover’s Rock and Studio One inspired sounds, this will be a supercharged version of the Pachyman shows we’ve seen in the past.
